UTS Library has a vast subterranean Library Retrieval System. The LRS containing over 500,000 books with a capacity for up to a 1 million books. The system works under a barcode and RFID scanning , allocating each item in 1 of the 12,000 drawers within a 6 aisled space. A 15m high crane from each aisle are in constant work retrieving requested items to be delivered above ground, to the library.
Making visible what was previously invisible, Studio Chris Fox proposed an artwork that maps this unique journey that each book will take through the subterranean volume.
Overtime, the journey of each book can be visualised as a series of lines and curves The LRS is a space that is not seen but works underground, delivering books to university students with a sequenced time stamp.
Derived from a computational process, these lines and curves map movements of knowledge through space and time.
